Job Description
VECRA, Inc. is seeking full-time qualified Tier II Interpreters/Translators fluent in one or more of the following languages: Dari, Pashto, Uzbek, Pashai, Turkmani, Nooristani, Baluchi, Urdu, Arabic, and Hindi. The selected candidates will provide professional interpretation and translation services for legal matters, both in-person and remotely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide written translation of legal and official documents with the highest accuracy, from target language(s) to English and vice versa.
  • Translate reports and texts that include both factual and abstract language, in both electronic and hard-copy formats.
  • Provide impartial, confidential in-person and/or remote professional interpretation (generally consecutive, occasionally simultaneous).
  • Apply knowledge of regional dialects and use appropriate modes of interpretation.
  • Render services in-person, via telephone, videoconference, or other virtual means.
  • Travel with clients to interpretation sites as needed (different from worksite).
  • Show respect for Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients, their culture, dialect, and beliefs.
  • Self-correct, understand linguistic limitations, seek clarification, and accept correction when necessary.
  • Practice active listening, pick up cues regarding level of understanding, and clarify as needed.
  • Understand language as an expression of culture and recognize the assumptions of each party in the encounter.
  • Detect and explain potential cultural discomforts in the target language.
  • Foster direct communication between the provider and client.
  • Maintain professional distance and integrity throughout interactions.
  • Diffuse conflicts by remaining calm and impartial.
  • Clarify instructions and follow-up steps diplomatically.
  • Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource for clients and case managers.
  • Avoid generalizations and stereotyping.
  • Review and transcribe audio or internet materials with high accuracy when required.
  • Prepare written reports, fact sheets, forms, and other assigned materials.
  • Master the use of reference materials to support translations.
  • Possess proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to perform basic research on the web.
  • Participate in all required training and assessments conducted by VECRA.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with 5-7 years of experience, or
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with 8-10 years of experience.
  • Must pass proficiency tests in one or more target languages (Pashto, Dari, Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Uzbek, Pashai, Turkmani, Nooristani, or Baluchi).
  • Must pass English proficiency test (Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
  • U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Ability to capture geopolitical, regional, ethnic, and cultural elements in translation, adhering to target language norms.
  • Passionate about working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
  • Must understand and maintain confidentiality regarding all materials translated and interpreted.
  • Ability to perform comfortably in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pass an extensive Federal, State, and County background check.
  • For remote work, must have:
    • Desktop or laptop computer
    • High-speed internet
    • Quiet, private space to ensure confidentiality of client information.

  • Ability to identify and summarize factual points and abstract concepts accurately.
  • Certification and/or testing by a nationally recognized entity (e.g., ATA, AIIC, FBI Language Test, State Department exam, court certification) is a plus.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday (work hours may vary based on client needs, with some weekend work required).
  • Job location options: Arlington, VA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; Metairie, LA; New York City, NY; Bethpage, NY; Newark, NJ; San Francisco, CA; Tampa, FL.
  • Ability to commute/relocate: Must have reliable transportation or plan to relocate before starting work.
